From December to March the North of Australia enters the “wet season”. Whilst 90% of our annual rainfall
will fall within this period it should not discourage you from visiting.
The countryside comes alive turning a lush green with waterfalls thundering from the top of the escarpment. You may also be lucky enough to witness some truly spectacular lightning and thunder storms. In a tropical climate such as this the majority of rain comes with monsoon storms typically in the early morning and late afternoon but rain may not fall for days on end. At this time of the year our itineraries and daily activities change to cope with the varying climate.
Tour Departs Wednesdays and Saturdays until the 31st of March 2008.
Please Note: Child prices (when sharing with adults) are available on application and subject to availability. Prices for children sharing with two adults available on application.
Itinerary (3KLA - The Wet Season):
Day 1
We depart your Darwin accommodation around 0700 hours.
We travel east along the Arnhem Highway across the Adelaide & Mary River systems towards Kakadu. A brief stop at
the Bark Hut Inn before continuing across the South Alligator River floodplains to Ubirr to view the Aboriginal rock
art spanning 23,000 years at this seasonal occupation site. (If Ubirr is closed we will instead visit Burrungui,
Nourlangie Rock another of Kakadu’s world class rock art sites). The scenery at either site is magnificent.
Later this afternoon we embark on a guided cruise on the world famous Yellow Water wetlands with the opportunity to
see some of the myriad bird life and perhaps the awesome saltwater crocodile. Brolgas, Jabiru, Whistling Ducks, Radjah
Shellduck & Magpie Geese together with many species of Kingfisher and Heron abound in these wetlands.
After the cruise we continue our journey to this evening’s accommodation at the Gagudju Crocodile Holiday
Inn.
Day 2
After breakfast we travel south along through the South Alligator Valley to spend time in the southern, less visited
section of Kakadu known as the stone country. A visit to this area will surely be a highlight.
Gunlom was made famous in the movie “Crocodile Dundee” as Echo Pool. There we have the opportunity to hike
to the top of the waterfalls and explore the beautiful rock pools as well as take in the spectacular view. (If Gunlom
is closed we will visit another waterfall in the area, either the Yurmikmik area or the Ikoymarrwa Rockhole).
Leaving Kakadu we then continue westward to the historic mining settlement of Pine Creek, site of a major gold rush a
century ago and still a gold mining town today.
A brief look around the town before we continue to our overnight accommodation at the Lake Bennett Wilderness Resort.
Day 3
This morning our journey takes us to Litchfield National Park to visit the beautiful Tolmer Falls and Wangi Falls two
of the many waterfalls cascading from the Tabletop Ranges. Perhaps a swim in the plunge pool at the base of Wangi, or a
walk to explore the surrounding monsoon rainforest.
After lunch at the Monsoon Cafe just north of Wangi we continue our journey and visit the Florence Falls, perhaps the
prettiest of them all.
Later in the afternoon we leave the national park via the small township of Batchelor and then continue on to Darwin
arriving around 1700.
